Grandpa Schrempp immigrated from Germany to the United States in 1923. He sailed on the S. S. Mount Clay from Hambug Germany on 9 August 1923 arriving at Ellis Island on 20 August 1923 with $25 in his pocket. His final destination was Vineburg California (near Napa) the home of his uncle, Bernhard Schrempp.

The following information is off the Ellis Island website. When I look at the image of the original ship manifest, the image does not support the data they are giving. They seem to have an error in their data.

Bernhard (1886 - 1949) arrived in the US via Ellis Island on 13 April 1907. Bernhard came from Lissen. He sailed out of Havre on the La Savoie.

Here is a link to the Ellis Island web. You can do a search by name of the ship Manifests. Here is a link directly to the search page. You can get basic information, to get more details you have to register with a free account.

Note: My scanner is not big enough to scan the birth certificate in one pass.

    Grandma Schrempp

Edith Englehorn was born on a small farm in Joseph Oregon in 1909. She passed away in 2002.

    Grandma Schrempp

Her early years were spent in Los Molinos, CA. She was one of four siblings, having one sister and two brothers. The family lived outside of town on several acres. Upon graduating from high school she moved to San Francisco and attended cosmetology school. She worked in San Francisco for several years as a beautician. She met and married Joseph Schrempp in 1932. They later moved to Gerber, CA to raise their family.

What I Will Always Remeber About Grandma Schrempp

    • The Card Player
    • The Biologist
    • The Quilter

These are the three things I will always remember about Grandma.

    The Card Player

Learning to play pinnacle, I always looked forward to playing pinnacle when grandma would come to visit. She taught me how to count cards and remember what had been played. I am a much better card player because of her lessons.

    The Biologist

There was always something cool to look at through her microscope. I never really understood what she was doing, but she always had some experiment going; splicing seeds, growing something. When I see an iris I will always think of her.

    The Quilter

As a child growing up, it seemed like I always had one of grandma's quilts on my beds to keep me warm. As I neared graduation from high school, I anxiously awaited my graduation quilt. Twenty plus years later, it is getting thin, but I still have my quilt, I will always have my quilt.

    I miss you grandma.

    Grandpa Kolm

    Leland "Lee" Kolm

From the A-T-E Journal, May 1939
The ATE Journal began in 1935 as a publication for the engineers at NBC. In August of 1941 it became the Broadcast Engineers' Journal and was directed at the technical staff of all the networks and N.A.B.E.T. members.

This month's Person-AIR-ity is none other than Leland B. Kolm. Lee was born December second, 1911, in Schuyler, Nebraska, and shortly thereafter moved with his family to Coos Bay, Oregon. When about five years old another move took him to Portland, Oregon where he grew up and attended school. While attending Polytechnical High in Portland, Lee decided to follow radio as a career. He joined the school radio club and very soon had his first amateur call, W7WY. With the idea in mind of operating the broadcast station KBPS owned by the high school, after graduation in 1930 Lee attended Oregon Institute of Technology where he brushed up on his code and theory to enable him to obtain his second class commercial license. This obtained, instead of joining KBPS, he joined KEX in May, 1931 as relief transmitter operator. When NBC took over in the fall of 1931 he became a full fledged studio and transmitter engineer. In 1934 KEX and KGW consolidated their studios so Lee moved on to KFJR as a relief operator for a while and then on to KIEM in Eureka California as chief operator and announcer. While at KIEM he helped build and install a separate transmitter building and change from 100 to 500 watts. Came February of 1937 and Lee moved on to NBC San Francisco where after a very short time he started plugging patches on the board. With his six feet four he has found little difficulty in reaching the highest parts of the tall board. Married in 1933. to Kathleen Lewis of Portland, Lee is the proud father of three children: Richard, who is four, Eileen who is three, and David who is two. Despite the ages he wants it known that he is not gunning for the record held by Maher of Chicago. Lee claims as hobbies kids, gardening, and sightseeing -a group that keeps him more than busy. He had one bout with music and theatricals as usher and automatic organ player in a Portland theater. Trying to improve on the limited capacities of the automatic organ he rigged a Victrola through an amplifier to a loud speaker behind the screen. It worked but the young audience hooted the Victrola recordings so Lee decided he had better stick with radio.

Grandpa worked for NBC Radio in SF for 30 or 40 years. Brother Jim has a page about Grandpa's days at NBC.
