  • It is an HO Brass UP 4-8-4 Northern.
  • The engine and tender are in separate boxes.
  • The boxes are brown cardboard.
  • Stamped in black ink (like with a rubber stamp) on the ends of the boxes is "U.P.4-8-4 LOCO." Additionally on the tender box is stamped "TENDE".
  • The boxes look to have the original packing material in them. In the bottom is a piece of 1/8 inch ply wood and some "felt" padding.
  • It has smoke deflectors on the engine. There is a second set of smoke deflectors in the box with more rivet detail.
  • I can not find any identifying marks on the engine, I might not know where to look. Not even the word "Japan".
  • It is undecorated.
  • The tender is a "centipede" type oil tender.
  • There is not any detailing in the cab.

There is an extra set of smoke deflectors. The ones installed on the engine are soldered in place, these were made to "clip on".

The only number I can find is on the underside of the pilot, this looks more like a part number for the pilot. I think it is 2914.

It is obvious where extra material was removed from the joint between the fire box and the boiler so that the motor would fit.

Details That Might Help Identify It:

The front Pilot - The front pilot has what looks like a part number of the bottom of it.

The way the body hooks onto the frame, one bolt through the front truck and two bolts into the frame from the back under the cab. Not up from the bottom. See the Engine Cab image.

The bolt on the front truck. This seems interesting to me. It is not just a bolt. This is a "double" ended bolt with a raised area in the middle. The raised area holds the frame to the body and holds the spring onto the assembly. There is a nut on the bottom that holds the truck to the bolt.

The story of how I got this model:

A number of years ago a fellow modeler was helping a widow sell off some of her late husband's collection. My understanding is that he owned a model train store. She sold the store off with all the stock. He had a number of pieces at home that she felt were special so she did not include them in the store stock, she wanted them to go to someone who would appreciate them. She contacted a family fiend and he went about selling the pieces off for her. So one night he showed up at the layout I was regularly going to and I picked up this Brass UP 4-8-4. It is brand new and in the original boxes.

I recently picked up a copy of the Brown Book but can not identify the manufacturer. The front of the book talks about different boxes used at different time importers. This box is not described in the front section of the book.
